Pencil on paper holds a certain purity, you see both the hand and the subject, right there. I don't like  precious-ness in my work, and consider mark making and the characteristics of the materials as much as the subject. I'll draw on pretty much anything, but my current favourite paper is newsprint. I like how it takes the graphite, that it wrinkles easily and changes colour over time. It has a life of its own.
